City basketball season starts this weekend with jamborees

The winter high school sports season officially starts next Monday, Dec. 10. That’s true for many teams.

For the girls and boys basketball teams of Waterbury, the season really begins this weekend. The girls play on Saturday, beginning at noon, at Kennedy High School. The boys go on Sunday, with the first contest taking place at 1 p.m.

The jamboree schedule

As reported by Joe Palladino on The Hoop Zone, the schedule is the same for both days in terms of matchups. Each game is 10 minutes, and here is the order of the games: Crosby/Kaynor Tech; Chase Collegiate/Wilby; Kennedy/WCA; Holy Cross/Sacred Heart; Crosby/Kaynor loser vs. Chase/Wilby loser; Kennedy/WCA loser vs. Holy Cross/Sacred Heart loser; Crosby/Kaynor winner vs. Chase/Wilby winner; Kennedy/WCA winner vs. Holy Cross/Sacred Heart winner; consolation final; jamboree final.

Can anyone beat the Hearts?

The biggest questions facing city basketball surround the same school: Sacred Heart. The Heart girls won the NVL Tournament championship for the first time in 2018, while the Heart boys captured yet another crown. Can anyone beat Sacred Heart? Who will the teams be to step up and challenge the Hearts on the hardwood in 2018-2019? We may get somewhat of an answer this weekend at the jamborees.
