The Central Connecticut State University baseball team received votes in the Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season Fab 40 poll for 2018 released on Tuesday.
There are two locals who will play a big role in the success of the Blue Devils in 2018. Former Bristol Central standout Mitch Guilmette will be a senior and one of CCSU’s most consistent hitters. Guilmette led the Blue Devils with a .331 batting average and earned All-NEC honors. He also had a good summer with a .374 batting average while playing for the Bristol Blues of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Guilmette didn’t have enough at bats to qualify for the batting title, but he still had a solid summer.

Former Bristol Eastern right-hander Tom Curtin hopes to translate a great 2017 summer with the Bristol Blues into a strong junior season in 2018. Curtin led the FCBL with 12 saves. In his sophomore season with CCSU, he tied for fifth in victories with three.
Guilmette and Curtin played against each other as rivals at Muzzy Field in the Central-Eastern baseball rivalry. They became teammates with CCSU, then did it again with the Blues in 2017. Both hope to lead the Blue Devils to an even better season in 2018.

Shirling-Davis was a leader at Kennedy High School, and she’s off to a solid start in her first season with the Falcons.
She has played in all 10 games with five starts. Shirling-Davis is averaging 28.3 minutes and 4.8 points per game. She had a season-high eight points in each of her last two games before the Christmas break.
Shirling-Davis is tied for second in assists per game at 4.0, and she is also averaging a steal and a block per contest. She has played at least 35 minutes in each of the past five games, including all 40 twice.

Egypt Santos, UConn Avery Point basketball
The former Kaynor Tech standout is off to a good start in her first season with the Huskies.
Santos has played in 14 games and is averaging just under 10 points per contest (9.9). She began her college career with a bang, scoring 18 points in each of her first two games. Santos has reached double digits in eight of the 14 games she has played in. She is averaging almost 10 points on a solid 44.8 field goal percentage.
Santos has also been solid on the boards and defense, averaging 10.3 rebounds and 1.86 steals per game.

The senior from Holy Cross competed in the UConn MultiEvent Challenge, and he turned in a good fourth place finish.
Borecki charged his way into the top five on the second day of competition with great efforts in the pole vault, 60-meter hurdles and 1,000-meter run. His best performance came in the pole vault, where he took second place at 4.60 meters (15.09 feet).
Borecki ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.20, then claimed a time of 2:52.29 in the 1,000-meter run.
Borecki was 10th after the first day of competition, then surged to the top five in the season-opening meet for CCSU indoor track and field. The meet was held at the Hugh Greer Field House.
