DeFilippi (Mount Ida athletics) |
Mount Ida senior Joey DeFillippi made some history last Thursday, and then he made a big play to seal his team’s win.
The former Bristol Central standout became the third player in Mustang history to pass the 1,200-career point mark. DeFillippi had just nine points in the 72-68 win over Norwich, but the two biggest came late.
DeFillippi, listed by Mount Ida at 5-foot-9, grabbed an offensive rebound off his own three-point miss and was fouled in the waning seconds of the game. His two free throws upped the Mustang lead to four points and sealed the victory.
DeFillippi ended the game with seven rebounds, one steal and was 5-of-7 at the foul line. He leads Mount Ida in scoring at 13.2 points per game.
The win put the Mustangs within a half-game of the eighth and final spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament. Mount Ida (4-10 GNAC) is now a game behind Anna Maria (5-9) for that final spot, but they play the AMCATS tonight on the road. The Mustangs won the first meeting between the teams.
