DeGennaro wins two gold medals; Woodland finishes third at Class S meet

Woodland senior Laura DeGennaro had a last Class S state championship swim meet to remember on Wednesday in West Hartford.

DeGennaro won two individual gold medals and was part of two more gold medal-winning relay teams at Cornerstone Aquatics Center. DeGennaro’s effort helped the Hawks earn a third place finish as a team (422 points) behind second place Daniel Hand-Madison (485) and first place Weston (748).

DeGennaro won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.96 and the 500 free in 5:13.41. The 200 free relay of senior Josephine Nesta, junior Eva Lynn, sophomore Abigail Miko and DeGennaro took gold in 1:42.30 while the 400 free relay team of DeGennaro, Nesta, Lynn and Miko was first in 3:42.73.

Miko was the silver medalist in both the 50 frees (24.53 seconds) and 100 free (54.70). Nesta placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:03.39) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:22.72), and Lynn took eighth in the 50 free (26.48).

Wolcott freshman Emma Lawson earned a silver medal in the 100 backstroke (1:00.93) and was fifth in the 200 free (2:03.07).

St. Paul/Lewis Mills senior Emersyn Hertzler was seventh in the 50 free (25.99) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.48).

The State Open swim meet is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Kiphuth Exhibition Pool on the campus of Yale University.
