It came down to penalty kicks in an NVL girls soccer semifinal between Wolcott and Holy Cross on Tuesday night at Watertown High School.
The Eagles outscored the Crusaders 4-2 on penalty kicks and claimed a 2-1 victory. Second-seeded Wolcott will play in its first NVL championship on Thursday night against top-seeded Watertown at 7:15 at Naugatuck High School.
Wolcott goalkeeper Allie Gough stopped the first Holy Cross penalty kick, and the Eagles rode the momentum from there. Sam Lagasse, Ella Vaughn, Bella Piacentini and Michaela Vaughn scored on PKs for Wolcott, which was ranked eighth in the most recent Class M/S soccer coaches poll.
Wolcott lost 4-1 at home to Watertown, but that was back on Oct. 10. The Eagles have been playing a lot better since and will be looking to give the Indians a much tougher challenge on Thursday night. That loss was the only one on Wolcott’s ledger in the regular season (11-1-4).
