It was a better week for area high school football teams in Week 3. WCA pulled away for a Thursday night win over Wolcott, then Holy Cross, Bristol Eastern and Bristol Central all picked up victories Friday. The Crusaders ran past Kennedy in their all-city matchup.
Here’s how Week 3 turned out, in no particular order:
HOLY CROSS 42, KENNEDY 0
Drew Caouette fired three touchdown passes, and three different receivers caught one as the Crusaders cruised to victory at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.
Caouette threw touchdown passes to Ronald Florian-Moreta, Marques Campbell and Dylan Gray. Luke Coletti got in on the act with a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Aaden Hall when both teams had backups on the field. Nate Craft rushed for a pair of touchdowns, each from a yard out. Holy Cross improved to 2-1 and has another home game Saturday against Seymour at 1 p.m. at Snyder Field.
Kennedy senior Alazaron Roberts recovered a fumble, and sophomore quarterback Jaydon Lopez completed a deep pass near the end of the first half. The Eagles tried for a field goal on the final play, but it was blocked. Kennedy fell to 0-3.
WCA 22, WOLCOTT 13
The Eagles had their chances on Thursday night at Snyder Field, but it was the Spartans who came up with the biggest plays.
Wolcott blocked a Dylan Rossi punt early in the fourth quarter, but WCA made sure it didn’t capitalize. The Eagles got the ball black later on, but the Spartans were able to block a go-ahead field goal attempt by Sebastian Polkowski with about six minutes to play. WCA led, 15-13, at the time. After the Eagles again got the ball back, the Spartans were able to recover a fumble. D’Vonte Lane ran for a touchdown with 1:11 to play, and Dylan Rossi booted the extra point as WCA sealed the win. The Spartans also picked up touchdowns from Julian Snead (34-yard run) and Jordan Rossi (37-yard pass from Ethan Blaize). Dylan Rossi also connected on a 34-yard field goal attempt. WCA improved to 2-1.
Wolcott’s Jahon Rose ran 37 yards on fourth down for the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter, and Polkowski made the extra point. Quinn Pawlak cut the Eagle deficit to 15-13 with an eight-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Wolcott fell to 0-3.
BRISTOL EASTERN 2, HILLHOUSE 0
The Lancers won what could be described as the epitome of a defensive slugfest at Bowen Field in New Haven.
Eastern came up with big defense stop after big defensive stop, and the result is the program’s first 3-0 record since 2010. The Lancers began that year 6-0. That team lost one game in the regular season, finished 9-1, and qualified for the Class L state playoffs as the No. 8 seed. Eastern put up a battle on the road against top-seeded Masuk, but lost to future UConn quarterback Casey Cochran and the eventual state champions, 49-23.
This year’s version of the Lancers hosts South Windsor this coming Friday at 6 p.m.
BRISTOL CENTRAL 42, FAIRFIELD WARDE 14
The Rams ran 47 times for 421 yards and six touchdowns in the home rout of the Mustangs from the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
The Central offensive line opened up big running lanes for the likes of Anthony Paulino, Jack Hartley and Cassias Breland. Paulino had a couple highlight-reel touchdown runs from 52 and 22 yards out. The Rams led at halftime, 20-0, on the way to their first win of the season. Central improved to 1-2.
