It was a rough couple of days for area teams in Week 2 of the high school football season.
Just two out of 10 area teams, Bristol Eastern and Crosby, picked up victories, and both of those came on Friday night. The Lancers knocked off Hartford Public, 27-13, at home. The Bulldogs ran past Derby, 37-12, on the road.
For Eastern, it’s the second 2-0 start in the past three seasons. For Crosby, the wait has been much, much longer. The Bulldogs are 2-0 for the first time since their terrific 2008 campaign, when they were 9-2. That was the year that Crosby won an 18-14 stunner over Ansonia at home.

BRISTOL EASTERN 27, HARTFORD PUBLIC 13
For the second straight week, senior Adam Zavecz came up big for the Lancers. He ran for two fourth quarter touchdowns, including a 73-yard burst, that increased Eastern’s lead from 13-6 to 27-6. His first touchdown came from seven yards out.
Both Zavecz (102) and Jaiden Fore (29-156) went over the century mark on the ground for Eastern. Fore scored the game’s first touchdown from four yards out. Kamden Laprise got in on the action with a six-yard touchdown pass to Zion Otero, who was a defensive hero last week.
Laprise’s main target was Chase Dauphinee, who hauled in four of Laprise’s six completions for 120 yards.
Bristol Eastern is at Hillhouse this coming Friday as part of the Connecticut High School Football Alliance. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bowen Field.
CROSBY 37, DERBY 12
Jeremiah Febus had a monster night overall for the Bulldogs in their win over the Raiders at the Ryan Athletic Complex.
Febus was 4 for 4 for 112 yards and a touchdown passing, and he ran for 64 yards on 10 attempts with two touchdowns. For good measure, Febus tallied three two-point conversions. On defense, Febus recorded 11 total tackles, including 1.5 for loss.
Will Rogers had the other two touchdowns and ran for a team-high 105 yards on 15 carries. Jaedon Cobb (9-55), Steve Dunbar (9-54), Rickie Nieves (3-50) and Kalib Shaw (3-13) also got in on the rushing attack. Jireh Rawlison hauled in two passes for 72 yards, Courdel McLarty caught one for 25 and Tobia Agba had one reception for 15.
On defense, Rawlison and Agba tallied interceptions while Nieves had a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Jose Rivera had nine tackles, including one for a loss while Cobb added five tackles, including 1.5 for loss.
Crosby plays Woodland (1-1) in its home opener this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jimmy Lee Stadium.
