A little over a year ago, Bristol native Donovan Clingan was on the floor at Mohegan Sun Arena, celebrating a second straight undefeated season and Division II state championship with Bristol Central.
On Saturday night, Clingan was again celebrating on a basketball court. This time the court was inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The team the 7-foot-2 freshman was celebrating with was the UConn men’s basketball team, and the journey isn’t over for Clingan and company.
The Huskies destroyed Gonzaga, 82-54, to reach the program’s first Final Four since 2014, when they won the national championship. UConn will play at NRG Stadium in Houston, along with fellow participants Texas, San Diego State and Florida Atlantic University.
“From back to back undefeated seasons and a state championship to the Final 4 @clingan_donovan is a winner! Well deserved! We’re all so proud of you! 🐏πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ€” tweeted Bristol Central principal Pete Wininger, along with a video of Clingan running over to celebrate with family after the victory.
Richard Brown, who’s son Austin played with Clingan at Bristol Central, shared the same video from UCTV Sports on Twitter.
“Not surprised by what @clingan_donovan has accomplished! Hard working, respectful young man who through it all has stayed grounded and true to his Bristol and BCHS roots! They sky is the limit!! πŸπŸ€πŸ’ͺ🏻” Brown tweeted.
When Clingan fired down a two-handed dunk on a fast break with 14:17 to go in the game, the Huskies held their biggest lead to that moment, 60-37. UConn led by as many as 30 points before winning by 28.
Clingan played 12 minutes and finished with six points, three rebounds and three blocked shots.
