WCA boys soccer opens with big win

Xavier Duarte (18) scored WCA’s first goal of the season, and the Spartans went on to a 2-0 win over Oxford on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.

The WCA boys soccer team came out with plenty of energy in their season-opening match against Oxford at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.

That energy translated to some good offensive chances against a Wolverine defense that the Spartans had on their heels. When Will Mowrey’s left-footed corner kick found the right foot of Xavier Duarte, the ball found the net for a goal. It was a tremendous goal from start to finish, and it gave WCA an early 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines tried to get something going offensively, but the Spartans wouldn’t let it happen. Dawayne Hall made something happen instead for WCA. He drove left from the sideline, then blasted a left-footed shot into the goal for a 2-0 lead. Duarte and Hall came face-to-face and celebrated.

The second half was tightly contested with Oxford putting the pressure on WCA. What the Spartans also possess, however, is All-NVL goalkeeper Silas Creaven, and he made 10 saves in the shutout. Creaven, Duarte and Mowrey are part of an experienced core of returning players that head coach Ryan McDonald will lean upon for success.

After Tuesday’s win, it’s so far, so good for WCA.
