Wolcott’s Tyson Brenes (5) pushes the ball up the field during Wednesday night’s boys soccer season opener at Torrington’s Robert H. Frost Athletic Complex.
The Wolcott boys soccer team found itself down by a goal at halftime of its season opener at Torrington on Wednesday night.
The Eagles put together some solid chances, including a great one in front of the Raider goal, but couldn’t convert in a 1-0 loss at the Robert H. Frost Athletic Complex. The first chance came on sophomore Connor Silva’s corner kick from the far right side of the field. Silva put the ball to the head of fellow sophomore Tyson Brenes, but his header went out high and left.
The next chance for the Eagles was their best. Brenes did a great job pushing the tempo and got to the box, where he crossed a pass on the ground to sophomore Damien Georges. All Georges needed was a tap to get the equalizer, but he struck it too hard and it went over the crossbar.
The third chance involved Brenes yet again. Senior Parker Zynda put his corner on the ground toward the near post, where Brenes met up with it. Brenes’ shot, however, went begging wide right.
Torrington didn’t get many chances – it had just two shots on goal all game – but it got the one goal needed to win when Ludwin Rivera put in a shot from the box in the first half off an assist from Dixon Rivera. Wolcott had its chances, but couldn’t capitalize. There’s no doubt the defending NVL tournament champion Eagles have young talent mixed in with veterans like Zynda and fellow seniors Sam Berninger and David Cardinale. It will come down to execution to achieve victories, and the good news is this was just the season opener.
