It was a pretty good night overall for local teams at Friday’s NVL indoor track and field championships at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
There was an impressive second place team finish by the WCA boys, along with a fourth from Kennedy. The top girls team was also from Kennedy, which finished fifth.
There were a total of 21 gold, silver and bronze medals handed out to local individuals and relay teams. Kennedy’s Erica Austin and Shania McCall both won individual gold, and each was a part of the winning 4×200-meter relay. Austin won the 55-meter dash, and she earned a meet record along the way with a time of 7.17 seconds during the preliminaries. Kennedy’s 4×200 of Kaianni Jones, McCall, Jasmine Ogando and Austin garnered a meet record time of 1:50.89 in their victory. McCall earned gold in the 55-meter hurdles, just getting past Naugatuck’s Lily Jason, 8.92-8.93.
WCA’s Lucas Figueiredo and Micah Chen both won individual gold on the boys side, and they were also part of the winning 1,600 sprint medley relay. Figueiredo earned gold in the 300 meters in a meet record time of 36.42. Chen took gold in the 55-meter dash, getting past Derby’s Quincy Carter, 6.62-6.67.
