The Wilby boys basketball team is off to a fantastic start this season.
The Wildcats are 5-0, and they have done so at breakneck speed. After edging past both Ansonia (64-62) and Seymour (60-52) to open the season, Wilby scored 97, 84 and 108 points in wins over Kennedy, Derby and Woodland.
Both Brandon Beamon (33) and Hikim Trueheart (30) hit the 30-point mark in Friday afternoon’s 108-63 win over Woodland. Louis Howard contributed 15 points in the victory. Beamon and Trueheart, a Kennedy transfer, are known commodities, but a third scorer behind them, be it Howard, Juny Gerena, or someone else, would make the Wildcats a truly scary offensive team.
Wilby has used pressure defense to trigger a fast-paced offense. The Wildcats trap all over the court, and when they get a turnover, they’re attacking the basket.
Wilby opens the new year against Watertown on Jan. 3 at home. The Wildcats are at Naugatuck on Jan. 5. Wilby hosts Holy Cross on Jan. 9. Looking down the road, the Wildcats are home against Crosby on Jan. 18.
