The Wolcott baseball team has had a history of close games against Northwestern Regional-Winsted, but last year’s Class M second round contest wasn’t one of them.
The Highlanders jumped all over the Eagles and pounded them in Winsted. The teams met again Saturday morning, this time in a Class M quarterfinal contest. Wolcott’s pitching was on point, and senior Nick Sconziano drove in the game’s lone run with a seventh inning double in a 1-0 victory over Northwestern. The No. 13 Eagles will play the winner of the SWC affair between No. 9 Joel Barlow-Redding, the defending Class M champion, and No. 17 New Fairfield. That game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
Wolcott’s left-handed, 1-2 punch of junior Drew Rocca and senior A.J. Martinez limited Northwestern to just two hits. Pitching has been huge for the Eagles so far in this state tournament. Rocca was terrific in relief in the first round comeback win over Lewis Mills, then senior Joe Ferrucci tossed seven strong innings before fellow senior Nate Yachtis pitched a scoreless eighth for the save in an extra-inning win at Rocky Hill.
Wolcott is in its first state semifinal since 2019, and it’s trying to reach the program’s first final since that same season.
