St. Paul boys’ golf senior Matthew Downes was more than able to tame The Golf Club at Oxford Greens on Monday, and the result was an awesome round.

Downes shot 33, or 3-under par, to earn medalist honors and lead the Falcons to a 184-201 win over the hosts from Seymour in an NVL match. Downes was 1-over through three holes, but finished with four birdies over his final six holes. Downes birdied the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth holes.

Downes sank his first birdie of the day on the par 4 fourth hole, which measured 405 yards. That birdie got Downes to even par.

Downes also birdied the next hole, the par 4 fifth, which played at 370 yards. After a par on the sixth, he birdied the par 4, 365-yard seventh hole. Downes parred the eighth hole, then claimed his last birdie of the day on the par 3, 175-yard ninth hole.

St. Paul improved to 3-0 with the win.
