Ryan Daniels couldn’t have picked out a better time to break out the home run trot for the first time in a UConn baseball uniform.

With a runner on in a tie game in the top of the ninth inning Saturday, Daniels went the other way with the first pitch he saw from Xavier reliever Clay Schwaner. The ball left the yard over the left field wall, and Daniels went into a trot that was very familiar to St. Paul and its opponents during his time on Maltby Street.

Daniel’s blast gave UConn an 11-9 lead after the visitors had entered the ninth down, 9-7. The Huskies won by that margin, salvaged a split of the doubleheader, and won the series over the Musketeers.

Daniels went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base, but it’s his first collegiate home run that will be remembered.
