WCA, Wilcox/Kaynor win Thanksgiving Eve football games and finish 5-5

The WCA football team had an up-and-down season, but it ended with a win on Thanksgiving Eve against Wilby at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.

The Spartans jumped out to a 25-point lead on the way to a 31-14 win over the Wildcats. WCA finished the season 5-5 while Wilby ended at 3-7.

D’Vonte Lane scored the first WCA touchdown, then added the last one to squelch thoughts of a Wilby comeback. Lane scored on runs of nine and 56 yards. KaVaughn Canady threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Dasani Yates returned an interception for a touchdown for the Spartans. WCA led by just a touchdown after one quarter, but extended the advantage to 19 by halftime and 25 in the third quarter.

James Richards got Wilby on the board in the third quarter with a 44-yard touchdown run. A 24-yard touchdown connection between Aaron James and Jaremiah Coleman narrowed the Wildcat deficit to 25-14 with 1:28 left in the third quarter. The Spartans answered when Lane dashed 56 yards to make it 31-14 with just 19.2 ticks on the third quarter clock.
