Wolcott track and field renovations underway, will last about four months

One year ago Sunday, the voters of Wolcott approved $1.41 million to finance projects at Wolcott High School and Tyrrell Middle School. Included in that funding is a new artificial turf and running track, along with bleacher repairs, at Wolcott High.

Access to the turf field and track was shut down on June 10, the day after graduation. Work is expected to take four months and was started as soon as possible to try to limit the amount of disruption to the fall sports seasons. A sign from Liberty Athletic Field Contractors at the track entrance says “TRACK AND FIELD IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS” AND “NO ENTRY”.

The upgrades for the field and the track are much needed, as noted by Wolcott Superintendent Anthony Glasper in his report to the Board of Education on May 10, 2021. That board of ed meeting was only about a month and a half before the town referendum.

It was noted at the Oct. 18, 2021, board meeting that Wolcott’s turf field was the oldest in the state in terms of active use at 16 years.
