St. Paul girls play for spot in semifinal round

The fifth-seeded St. Paul girls basketball team is playing for a berth in the Class MM semifinal round tonight.

The Falcons (17-5) host No. 13 Northwestern Regional (14-9) from the Berkshire League at 6:30 p.m. in the Rev. Brian Monnerat Gymnasium. St. Paul rallied to defeat No. 12 Waterford, 53-50, last Thursday night on Maltby Street.

A combination of youth and experience helped the Falcons pass their first state tournament test. Freshman Izzy Leggett scored a game-high 17 points while junior Nadia Riemer added 13 points. Sophomore Audrey Tice tallied nine points while seniors Zoey Rubins and Sarah Lindquist added six points apiece.

St. Paul trailed Waterford by eight points after the opening quarter, but was able to get to within five points by halftime. The Falcons trimmed another point off their deficit and entered the fourth down by four points. St. Paul outscored Waterford, 19-12, in the final eight minutes to complete the comeback and win the game.
