Kerwin Prince has had some big moments in his first season with Dodge City (Kansas) Community College, but none were bigger than the one that happened Saturday.
The former Crosby, Notre Dame (West Haven) Prep and Mercy (New York) College standout scored on a layup with 0.3 seconds left in overtime of the Region VI Division I Men’s Championship game against Hutchinson in Salina, Kansas. The basket gave the Conquistadors a two-point lead, and a desperation 3-pointer by Hutchinson missed, giving Prince and his team a 98-96 victory.
Dodge City is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, and Prince’s basket provided the winning margin. Prince played just 15 minutes due to foul trouble, but scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. He was an efficient 5 of 8 from the floor.
Dodge City (29-4) and 23 other teams will compete for a national championship March 14-19 in Hutchinson, KS.
