Holy Cross, St. Paul girls move on to quarterfinals

The Holy Cross and St. Paul girls basketball teams have moved on to the quarterfinal rounds in their respective classes of the state tournament.

The Crusaders, seeded first in Class M, had a first round bye before defeating NVL foe, No. 16 Watertown by a score of 83-60 in a second round matchup on Friday evening at Holy Cross High School. Holy Cross improved to 24-0 with the victory.

The Falcons, seeded fifth in Class MM, had a first round bye before rallying for a 53-50 comeback win over No. 12 Waterford on Thursday night at St. Paul Catholic High School. St. Paul improved to 17-5 with the win.

St. Paul and Holy Cross will compete on back-to-back nights, and both host their quarterfinal matchups. The Falcons will play No. 13 Northwestern (14-9) on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in a Class MM game. The Highlanders have defeated No. 20 Prince Tech (65-30) and came back to beat No. 4 Nonnewaug (36-35).

The Crusaders will play eighth-seeded New Fairfield (20-5), the South-West Conference tournament runner-up, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a Class M contest. The Rebels have defeated No. 25 Norwich Tech (55-16) and No. 9 Granby Memorial (43-18).
