A pair of former Waterbury basketball standouts are putting together strong seasons overseas.
Mike Mallory, who played at Holy Cross High before moving over to Marianapolis Prep and then Southern Connecticut State University, is having a great season for Anorthosis Ammochostou of Cyprus. Through 12 games (all starts), Mallory is averaging 20 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.6 steals in 34.2 minutes per contest. In the team’s most recent game, a 103-95 loss to Proteas EKA AEL on Dec. 21, Mallory erupted for 31 points on 12-of-22 shooting (4-of-5 3-pointers). He signed with Anorthosis Ammochostou on Sept. 7, 2021.
Anthony Ireland, who played at Crosby before moving over to Winchendon Prep and then Loyola Marymount University, is having another solid season in Europe. Ireland is playing for HydroTruck Radom of Poland. Through 16 games (all starts), Ireland is averaging 15.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1 steal in 31.7 minutes. Ireland led his team in scoring with 20 points in its most recent game, an 82-74 loss to King Szczecin on Saturday. He’s had a season-high 25 points on two different occasions this season. Ireland signed with HydroTruck Radon on May 4, 2021.
