The Holy Cross girls basketball team put together a perfect first half of the season (10-0). The Crusaders were dominant in that first half, averaging 70.9 points per game while yielding just 31.4 points.
The Naugatuck Valley League hasn’t provided much of a challenge so far this season for Holy Cross, with the closest margin of victory at 23 points in an 83-60 home triumph over Seymour on Jan. 18. The Crusaders did pick up a pair of solid non-league games.
Holy Cross’ closest contest of the season was a 55-51 home win over Mercy-Middletown in the second game, which was played on Dec. 15. Mercy plays in the tough Southern Connecticut Conference and is 7-3 on the season, with one of those losses coming against Bishop Guertin of New Hampshire this past Saturday.
Holy Cross took on Windsor (5-3) of the Central Connecticut Conference this past Thursday, also at home. The Crusaders scored 49 first half points on the way to an 81-54 victory. As usual, Holy Cross was led by the potent one-two punch of Mya Zaccagnini and Cayla Howard. Zaccagnini scored a game-high 34 points while Howard added 21 points. Zaccagnini, who can be lethal behind the 3-point line, made six treys against Windsor.
For the season, Zaccagnini is averaging 20 points per game while Howard is averaging 17.4.
