Week 8 football roundup: Just one local team won (Thursday); another will Monday

Week 8 of the high school football season has been unkind to most local teams with only one of six claiming victory over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

That was Bristol Central, which picked up its sixth straight win by beating E.O. Smith in Storrs. Crosby and St. Paul are scheduled to play Monday evening at 6 o’clock at McPhee Field in Bristol after their game was moved from Friday due to poor field conditions. One thing for certain is that a local team will win Monday.

Here’s what has happened so far this week:

THURSDAY
Bristol Central 44, E.O. Smith 8

FRIDAY
South Windsor, Bristol Eastern 22, OT: The Lancers lost a heartbreaker at home when the Bobcats scored a touchdown, then ran in the ensuing two-point conversion.
Eastern scored first in the Kansas tiebreaker overtime (four plays from the defense’s 10-yard line) on an Alex Marshall run and Gavin Damboise extra point. Marshall ran for three touchdowns, and Damboise made a pair of extra points.
South Windsor scored first in this back-and-forth game before Eastern claimed a safety to cut its deficit to 7-2 in the first quarter. The Lancers claimed the lead, 8-7, in the third quarter when Marshall scored his first touchdown. The Bobcats reclaimed the lead on a long touchdown pass and hit the two-point conversion to go ahead, 15-8. Marshall’s second touchdown run of the game and the accompanying Damboise extra point tied the game, 15-15, with under four minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
The Lancers fell to 3-4 on the season.
Woodland 44, Wolcott 7: Anthony Bell scored on the game’s final play from scrimmage and Sebastian Polkowski added the extra point for the Eagles (3-4) on a night that otherwise belonged to the Hawks (5-2) at Joe Monroe Field. Here are my photos from the game.
Naugatuck 24, Holy Cross 14: Jameson Fauth caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from David Kacprzyski in the first quarter, but the Crusaders (5-2) were held to just 63 total yards in the first half, according to a tweet from Chris Saunders of WATR.
Drew Caouette hooked up with Caiden Charette for a 53-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds (5-1) were in command by that time after a 17-0 third quarter.
Watertown 22, Kennedy 14: Damar Byrd had a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Dereck Ledee ran a yard for a touchdown, and Elliott Giordano rushed for a two-point conversion for the Eagles (1-6).

SATURDAY
Seymour 23, WCA 7: Carlos Calle ran for a touchdown and Dylan Rossi converted an extra point for the Spartans (3-3).
