Week 4 football: WCA, Wilby come together in solidarity before game

The WCA and Wilby football teams showed Friday night that their game is just that…a game.

The players from both teams shook hands, and the coaches exchanged hugs before their contest at Municipal Stadium. It was a sign of solidarity that was much needed following the violence that has plagued the city of Waterbury, including the stabbing death of a 14-year-old. It was a great moment of unity for the city.

As for the actual games during Week 4:

Holy Cross downed Crosby, 33-21, on Thursday at Municipal Stadium. Here’s my story about that game.

FRIDAY

WCA 38, Wilby 0: Carmelo Mojica got the Spartans going with a six-yard touchdown run, and his team rolled from there.

Mojica added another touchdown run, and teammate Zyaire Ettson accounted for four touchdowns (two running, two passing) as WCA improved to 2-1. Jordan Williams and Julian Snead caught the touchdown passes from Ettson.

Bristol Central 38, Farmington 29: Victor Rosa ran for 323 yards and five touchdowns on just 20 carries over three quarters, then the Rams held off a River Hawk rally to claim the victory.

Rosa ran left, right and all around the Farmington defense for Central, which improved to 3-1 with its third straight win.

Plainville 21, Bristol Eastern 20: The Lancers drove the ball to the Blue Devil side of midfield in the waning seconds, but Brady Brown’s last pass fell incomplete and the home team handed the road squad a tough loss.

Eastern (2-2) had actually pulled within a point on a touchdown pass from Brown to Nate Shorette that actually got tipped by teammate Rayshon Andrews. The Lancers went for two, but couldn’t complete their conversion pass. The teams combined for 27 points. Alex Marshall scored on a rushing touchdown, and Eastern also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another touchdown.

Ansonia 35, Wolcott 0: The Eagles (1-2), without the services of starting quarterback Mike Greene, had a tough time moving the ball against the undefeated Chargers (4-0). Ansonia didn’t have nearly as much trouble, and the result was a home loss on Wolcott’s pink night.

Here are my photos from the Wolcott game.

Naugatuck 54, St. Paul 6: Jason Mathews scored the lone touchdown for the Falcons (1-2).

O’Brien Tech 42, Wilcox/Kaynor 14: The co-op fell to 0-4 with the loss.
