Holy Cross won Thursday night on the gridiron, and also during halftime, at Ray Snyder Sr. Field.
The Crusader football team downed Wilby, 46-12, and improved to 5-1 on the season. Thomas Ligi had three rushing touchdowns and recovered an errant snap in the end zone for a fourth score. Mahkai Wilson blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Both David Kacprzyski and Drew Caouette threw a touchdown pass, Kacprzyski to Caiden Charette and Caouette to Marques Campbell.
At halftime, Holy Cross recognized those affected by cancer with a human ribbon made up of students and cheerleaders. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Thursday night’s game was a Pink Out. The names of those affected by cancer within the Holy Cross family were read aloud. It was a beautiful tribute, and the list of names of those affected by cancer, just in the Holy Cross family (remember, the school opened in 1968), was jaw-dropping. Far too many people, their families and their friends included, are affected by cancer.
That includes this writer. The ceremony made me think of my late grandfather, who battled cancer numerous times and whose response to chemotherapy was essentially bring it on. My grandfather had an incredible will to live, and it was inspiring.
Back to the game. Wilby got a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown from Aaron James before he left the game in the first half due to injury. James did not return to the game. James Richards had the touchdown reception for the Wildcats, who fell to 1-6.
