Bendtsen closes NVL career with banner day at track and field championships

Wolcott senior Nick Bendtsen wanted to end the NVL portion of his track and field career with the best effort he could give.

Bendtsen did more than that. He put together an unforgettable performance in the league championship meet on Saturday at Torrington High School.

Bendtsen won two events, and he broke two records. One record belonged to older brother Chris, who set it in 2010, his senior season. The other record was 45 years old, and belonged to Torrington’s Gerry Whitacker.

Bendtsen finished the 1600 meters in 4:09.96, or nearly seven seconds faster than Chris Bendtsen’s 2010 time of 4:16.50. Bendtsen completed the 3200 meters in 9:23.91, over six seconds faster than the 9:30-flat Whitacker ran in 1976.

Bendtsen finishes the NVL portion of his outdoor track career with two gold medals and one silver in both the 1600 and 3200. Next up is the state meet.
