Nine victories for local track and field athletes at NVL championships

There were nine individual championships won by local athletes on Saturday at the NVL track and field championships at Torrington High School.

Holy Cross senior Raquel Rosa and Wolcott senior Nick Bendtsen were double winners in their final NVL meet. There were also Holy Cross individual victories from senior Alyssa Hebb and senior Rafael Mahario, along with another Wolcott individual win from senior Lucas Gagnon. Freshman Jasmine Ogando and senior Taj Thomas of Kennedy also won NVL gold.

Rosa claimed first place in both the 200 (26.09) and 400 meters (58.84) while Bendtsen was first in the 1600 (4:09.96) and 3200 meters (9:23.91). Hebb won the high jump at 4’10” while Mahario was first in the high jump at 6’2″. Gagnon took first in the shot put at 44’3″. Ogando claimed first in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.42 while Thomas was first in the 400 meters in 50.47.

There were also several second place finishes, which led to All-NVL status (the top two individuals and top relays earned that honor). For the girls, Holy Cross senior Alyssa French-Graham was second in the shot put. Mahario was second in the 100 meters while senior Aidan Knappe of Sacred Heart was second in the 800 meters. Holy Cross sophomore Kaiden Dunn took second in the 300-meter hurdles.
