Locals take aim at NVL finals in soccer, volleyball

Several local teams have a shot at getting to the finals of NVL tournaments in soccer and volleyball, and the matches begin this evening.

In girls soccer, top-seeded Holy Cross (12-1-2 NVL) faces fourth-seeded Wolcott (11-4-0) tonight at approximately 7 o’clock at Ray Snyder Sr. Field. The teams played twice in the regular season, and the Crusaders won both matches against the Eagles. The season opener was 6-0 in favor of Holy Cross at Alumni Field, but when the teams met at Joe Monroe Field in the regular season finale, the Crusaders prevailed by just a 1-0 margin. Holy Cross beat eighth-seeded St. Paul, 5-1, in an NVL quarterfinal on Saturday. Wolcott downed fifth-seeded Naugatuck, 2-1, on Saturday.

In girls volleyball, fifth-seeded St. Paul (12-7 NVL) takes on top-seeded Seymour (19-0) tonight at approximately 7 o’clock at Torrington High School. The Falcons lost, 3-0, to the Wildcats in the only regular season meeting on Oct. 11 in the Brian Monnerat Gymnasium in Bristol. St. Paul took down fourth-seeded Kennedy, 3-2, in an NVL quarterfinal on Saturday. Seymour beat eighth-seeded Oxford, 3-0, on Saturday.

On Tuesday at 5 p.m., third-seeded Holy Cross boys soccer (12-2-1) faces second-seeded Woodland (14-1-0) at Ray Snyder Sr. Field. The Crusaders led the Hawks by two goals at halftime on the road on Oct. 25, only to see the Hawks rally for a 3-2 victory in the lone regular season meeting.

The NVL volleyball final is on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kennedy High School. The NVL soccer championships are Thursday at Ray Snyder Sr. Field, beginning with the boys game at 5 p.m. The girls game follows 30 minutes after the conclusion of the boys game.
