The Waterbury Career Academy boys soccer team did something Saturday that it hadn’t done in its brief varsity history.
The Spartans played in a postseason match for the first time. The score may have been lopsided in second-seeded Woodland Regional’s favor (7-0), but the NVL tournament quarterfinal match in Beacon Falls was another step in the right direction for seventh-seeded WCA.
In fact, there have been many positives so far in 2019 for the Spartans. The 9-5-2 record WCA posted in the regular season was its first winning season in program history. In the previous three years, the Spartans were 4-12-0, 1-15-0 and 1-15-0.
WCA finished second in the NVL Brass Division and was fifth overall in the league. The nine wins accumulated by the Spartans during the regular season were more than the previous three years combined.
On Friday, WCA will find out where and when it play its first state tournament game. The Spartans are ranked 18th in the Class M state tournament standings.
