Holy Cross girls soccer became the second team from Oronoke Road to
reach the Class S semifinal round with a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Coventry on Saturday afternoon at chilly Jimmy Lee Stadium.
The Crusader girls joined the boys in the semifinal round. The third-seeded
Holy Cross girls will play seventh-seeded Litchfield on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Field on the campus of Naugatuck High School. The third-seeded Crusader boys take on No. 15 Immaculate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Trumbull High School.
Juliana Dane, Sophia Vescera and Devon Bushka each scored a goal for the
Holy Cross girls. Bushka, Delia Murphy and Jenna Dibiase provided assists on those goals. Tori Schaffner recorded five saves in the win.
Dane got the Crusaders off to a very fast start with a goal just 1:38 into
the match. Bushka threaded a nice pass to Dane, who had beaten her defender. Vescera rocketed a ball into the goal at 23:21 to play in the first half off Murphy’s assist to make the score 2-0 Holy Cross.
In the second half, Bushka blasted one from 25 yards out off Dibiase’s
assist to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead with 13:48 to play. The Holy Cross
defense and Schaffner made sure Coventry had few chances to score.
The Crusader girls are looking to advance to the Class S final for the second
time in three years, with the last appearance coming in 2017. The Holy Cross boys are looking for their first trip to a state final since 1985, when they played in Class LL.
