WATERBURY’S WEEKLY ROUNDUP #8: Heart boys two wins away from another undefeated regular season in CT

The Sacred Heart boys basketball team hasn’t lost a regular season game in the state of Connecticut in a long time.
You have to go back to Dec. 30, 2013, when the Hearts were knocked off by Capital Prep by the score of 73-68 on the road. Sacred Heart hasn’t been on the wrong end of the scoreboard since, a span of 68 games.
That streak included games last week against Kennedy and Oxford. The Hearts went on the road Tuesday to Kennedy and won 75-57. Sacred Heart followed it up with a 89-39 home smacking of Oxford on Wednesday.
The Hearts are 18-0, and the final games of the regular season are this week against Ansonia and Watertown, both at home. The Chargers come to Alumni Hall on Monday, followed by the Indians on Wednesday.
Sacred Heart wins those two games, and it will have its third straight undefeated regular season against in-state opponents.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders won all three of their games last week to get to 15-4.
Holy Cross went on the road Tuesday and blew out Crosby by a score of 90-59. The Crusaders were on the road again Thursday and smacked Watertown 79-49. A 72-61 win at home over Wilby on Friday capped the perfect week.
Holy Cross hosts Torrington on Tuesday to end the regular season.
Kennedy: The Eagles rebounded from a loss to Sacred Heart with wins over Ansonia and Kaynor Tech.
Kennedy improved to 15-4 overall with a road game against Waterbury Career Academy left on Monday. The Eagles lost 75-57 to Sacred Heart at home on Tuesday, but rebounded with a 67-54 road win over Ansonia on Thursday. Kennedy ended the week with a 91-48 home win against Kaynor Tech.
Crosby: The only game of the week for the Bulldogs wasn’t a good one as they were defeated soundly by Holy Cross.
Crosby fell to 12-6 and has games against Bassick and St. Paul this week. The Bulldogs host both games, with the Lions coming to The Palace on Monday, followed by the Falcons on Wednesday.
WCA: The Spartans lost both of their games to fall to 9-9.
WCA lost 83-68 to Wilby on the road Tuesday, then dropped a 63-59 battle to St. Paul at home Thursday.
The Spartans play their final regular season home game Monday against Kennedy. Wednesday brings the regular season finale at Derby.
Wilby: The Wildcats won their first two games of the week at home before dropping the final one on the road.
Wilby defeated WCA 83-68 on Tuesday, then took down Wolcott 80-59 on Thursday. On Friday, the Wildcats were edged by Holy Cross, 72-61.
Wilby improved to 8-10 on the season and plays Seymour and Hartford Public in the final two games of the regular season. Wilby is at Seymour on Wednesday in a battle of Wildcats, then hosts Hartford Public in a makeup game on Friday.
Kaynor Tech: The Panthers won their first two games of the week before dropping the final one.
Kaynor Tech edged out Bullard Havens Tech 62-58 on Tuesday, then beat up on Cheney Tech, 63-39 on Wednesday. Both of those games were home. The Panthers lost 91-48 at Kennedy on Saturday.
Kaynor Tech is 6-13 and plays its season finale against Woodland on Wednesday at home. The Panthers are currently the No. 34 team in the Class M state standings, which leaves them on the outside looking in.
Chase Collegiate: The Highlanders sandwiched two losses around a win last week.
Chase lost to Harvey on Wednesday and South Kent on Saturday, but defeated Central Christian Academy 56-30 on Friday. The Highlanders are 4-14, 2-12 in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Two Kaynor Tech athletes advanced to the State Open, which will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Senior Terrell Patterson is seeded sixth in the 600 meters while junior Zyiera Brown is sixth in the 55-meter hurdles.
Sacred Heart sophomore Edward Williams is the No. 2 seed in the 55-meter hurdles. Williams is also in the 55-meter dash, where he is seeded ninth.

BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING
Sacred Heart: The Hearts improved to 8-3 with a slim 86-84 win over Seymour on Tuesday.
Dan Walsh won two individual events while Will Witkoski took another. Sacred Heart also won the 200-yard freestyle relay, and it was able to garner enough good finishes (2nds, 3rds) to win the meet.
Kennedy 93, Wilby 80: When this Tuesday meet was over, each team was 4-7.
Mike Graham and David Savedra won two events each. Relay wins in the 200 and 400 freestyles also helped the Eagles.
Wilby won the 200 medley relay, and it got individual wins from Joe Danay, Jonah Sharp and Angel Felix.
Wilby also swam against Seymour on Friday and lost 88-71. Danay and Sharp again picked up individual wins, along with Malik Hamblin. Wilby also won the 400 freestyle relay.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Kaynor Tech: The Panthers went 2-1 in their final week of the regular season to finish 14-6.
Kaynor Tech rocked Platt Tech 48-26 at home on Tuesday, then blasted Bullard Havens Tech 61-38 on the road Wednesday. The Panthers lost 56-37 to Woodland on the road Thursday.
Kaynor Tech is currently the No. 15 seed in the Class M state tournament, which sets them up with a first round home game against No. 18 Rocky Hill of the Central Connecticut Conference. Official seeds are announced on Wednesday.
Chase: The Highlanders started their week with a loss to Harvey, but rebounded with a 55-30 win over Williams.
Chase went 7-9 in the regular season and was 6-4 in the HVAL.
