Veronica Diaz, Husson University golf
The Eagles made program history on its home course on Sept. 22, and the sophomore from Sacred Heart High School was part of it.
Husson women’s golf won the 2019 Husson Invitational at Bangor Municipal Golf Course in Maine. The Eagles scored 724 as a team, three strokes better than Suffolk University (727). The tournament victory is the first in program history for Husson women’s golf.
Each player played 18 holes on consecutive days. Diaz shot 95 on each day for a two-day total of 190, which placed her eighth overall.
Cole Phelps, Central Connecticut State University football
This former Wolcott standout and current Blue Devil senior continues to be an anchor on the offensive line.
Phelps was a preseason All-Northeast Conference selection, and he’s doing well so far in 2019, even at a new position. Phelps, who started at either right guard or right tackle last season, is CCSU’s center in 2019. He has started all four Blue Devil games at center.
Phelps, listed at 6-foot-1, 280 pounds, has once again helped CCSU establish itself as a top 20 rushing offense at the FCS level. The Blue Devils are averaging 239.8 yards per contest on the ground, and 412.3 in total offense. CCSU ranks 19th in the FCS in rushing yards per game. The Blue Devils ran for only 115 yards on Sept. 21, but that came against FBS foe Eastern Michigan University on the road. CCSU came oh so close to an upset in that game, only to see a late blocked punt returned for a touchdown in a 34-29 loss.
Logan Marchi, Sacred Heart University football
Another week, another NEC Prime Performer accolade for the former St. Paul star signal-caller.
Marchi was 25-for-33 passing (75.8%) for 375 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-10 win at Long Island University on Sept. 21. The game was the NEC opener for SHU, which has won three straight games since a season-opening loss.
After tying the school record with six touchdown passes in the 56-40 win at Lafayette College, Marchi was the FCS National Performer of the Week. In four games, Marchi has completed 80 of his 131 passes (61.1%) for 1,224 yards, 12 touchdowns and just one interception.
SHU hosts CCSU on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN3 and is homecoming/cancer awareness day for the Pioneers.
Dathan Hickey, Yale University football
The former Bristol Central standout started the season opener for the Bulldogs, who defeated the College of Holy Cross, 23-10, on Sept. 21 at the Yale Bowl.
Hickey, a sophomore, played free safety and finished the game with three tackles. All three were solo tackles. Hickey made his first tackle of the season on an 11-yard rush by Domenic Cozier. The tackle came on the second drive of the game for Holy Cross.
Hickey stopped Jordan Forrest three yards short of a first down on a 1st and 10 from the Yale 22. Holy Cross settled for a field goal on that drive in the second quarter, which made the score 6-3 in favor of Yale.
Hickey’s final tackle came in the third quarter on an eight-yard run on first down by Connor Degenhardt. Yale forced Holy Cross to punt on that drive.
Addison Davis, Assumption College soccer
The former St. Paul defensive standout has played in all four games for the Greyhounds.
Davis, a freshman, has started the last three games, all on defense. Assumption has allowed one goal in four games, and that came in a 1-1 tie against Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at home. The Greyhounds are 3-0-1 and have won by scores of 3-0, 1-0 and 1-0.
Davis has one point in four games, which came on an assist in her first game, a 3-0 win over Bloomfield College on Sept. 5. Davis assisted on a goal by Morgan Paquin.
