Isaiah Negretti has returned to the mound in Wolcott, this time for the Wolcott Scrappers of the Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League. The former Wolcott High pitching standout used his right arm and his bat to lead Wolcott past the Tribury Cave, 5-2, on Sunday at the B.A.W. Complex.
Negretti threw a complete game and struck out 10 in a three-hitter for the Scrappers, who improved to 5-3. Negretti gave up two runs, both unearned, and threw 87 pitches (61 strikes) in the win. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI. Negretti has been working his way back on the mound with the Scrappers in 2019. He spent the 2016 and 2017 summers with the Wolcott Post 165 American Legion 19U squad after winning all five games in the 2016 Class M state tournament during Wolcott High’s championship run.
Matt Warren had a home run while Brendan Clark and Jeff Nicol each doubled and scored a run. Tyler Smith singled and drove in a run while Dan Kennedy added an RBI. Alan Stinson reached on an error and scored a run.
Zach Goldberg had two hits and an RBI while Tom Rinaldi doubled and scored a run for Tribury, which fell to 6-3. Ben Guisto pitched all six innings for the Cave and took the loss. He gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits, struck out nine and walked two.
Tribury held a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but Wolcott scored three times to claim a 3-2 advantage. Negretti singled home Nicol to make the score 2-1, then scored on Smith’s singled to tie the game. Kennedy’s fielder’s choice scored Stinson to give the Scrappers a 3-2 lead.
Wolcott added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Warren homered to right field to lead off the frame, and Negretti later drove home Clark with a single for a 5-2 lead.
