Offensive outburst, pitchers’ duel tell tale of St. Paul-Wolcott softball games

The two meetings between the St. Paul and Wolcott softball teams could haven’t had more of a contrast to them.

When the teams met on April 30 at George Babcock Field on the Wolcott High School campus, the Falcon offense paved the way to an 11-7 victory over the Eagles.

A week later, May 7, the teams met at St. Paul Catholic High School. In that game, pitching was the story as Kaitlyn Ouellette’s complete-game shutout propelled Wolcott to a 2-0 win over St. Paul.

The Eagles were 13-5 as of May 11. The Falcons won a 17-14 slugfest over Woodland Regional at home on Saturday to improve to 14-3.

Here’s what happened in the two St. Paul-Wolcott games:

St. Paul 11, Wolcott 7 (April 30 at WHS)

Abby Poirot had a double, two singles and four RBI while Jess Persechino added a double, single, two runs scored and three RBI for the Falcons. Katrina Roy had two singles, a walk and three runs scored while Janessa Gonzalez added three hits and three runs scored. Ava Hampton and Rebecca Nerbonne each had two RBI for St. Paul, which tallied 14 hits.

Josie Cammarata doubled, scored two runs and drove in two runs for the Eagles. Madison Rotella had a single and two RBI while Mac Crimmins and Kayla Nuelan each added an RBI. Alexis Boyce had a triple for Wolcott, which took advantage of four St. Paul errors.

Wolcott 2, St. Paul 0 (May 7 at SPCHS)

Ouellette struck out seven, walked none, and scattered five hits in her shutout for the Eagles. Cammarata had a single, sacrifice fly and two RBI to lead the offense. Nuelan doubled and scored a run while Ouellette walked and scored a run.

Poirot also pitched a complete game. She gave up two runs on four hits, struck out 11 and walked five in the loss for the Falcons. Hampton had two singles in three at bats against Ouellette.
