It’s not uncommon for area baseball teams to play a home-and-home against a nearby opponent. Wolcott and St. Paul did it this season, but the way it happened was unusual.
It has rained a lot this spring, and that has screwed up many a local high school sports schedule. The same holds true for the Falcons, who have moved games from their soggy home field to other locations such as Muzzy Field in Bristol. Or, in the case of the game against Wolcott on Tuesday, to Wolcott High School.
St. Paul won the game on Tuesday by a score of 3-2. Ethan Rembish pitched the first five innings for the win, and Dylan Gagnon took the last two frames for the save. Jack Drewry was tremendous for Wolcott and made few mistakes. One was to Ryan Parent, who hit a home run. Parent’s RBI single in the top of the sixth inning gave the Falcons the 3-2 lead they would retain for the win.
On Friday, St. Paul and Wolcott met in the return game at St. Paul Catholic High School. The Friday game was originally slated for Wolcott High School, but switched after Tuesday’s game had to be moved from St. Paul. The Eagles got their revenge on the Falcons, 4-2 in 10 innings in another low-scoring battle. Dane Hassan played hero at the plate and on the mound for Wolcott. Hassan’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning put the Eagles ahead 3-2. Alex James had an RBI single to make it 4-2, then Hassan went to the mound in the bottom of the 10th to close the game out. Hassan retired the Falcons 1-2-3 to finish the game with the win. He retired all 11 batters he faced in his outing.
