Holy Cross, Wolcott each have pair of double winners at NVL track meet

The Naugatuck Valley League Outdoor Track and Field Championships were held on Tuesday at Torrington High School, and four local athletes were double winners.

All of the double winners came from either Holy Cross or Wolcott. Holy Cross sophomore Raquel Rosa took gold in the 200m (26.10 seconds) and 400m (58.74) dashes while senior Kyle Moser claimed gold in the shot put (46’8″) and discus (134’11”). Rosa was named top female sprinter in the league while Moser was both the top male thrower and top senior, according to a post on Holy Cross’ Facebook page.

Wolcott juniors Kathryn Rodrigues and Nicholas Bendtsen were double winners. Rodrigues won gold in the 1600m (5:14.13) and 3200m (11:30.81) while Bendtsen grabbed gold in the 1600m (4:35.02) and 3200m (10:16.72).

There were plenty of single gold winners from the area, but the highlight of the day belonged to Sacred Heart senior Jenna French. French not only took gold in the 800m, she did so with a record time of 2:19.09. French’s time bested the previous mark of 2:20.83 run by Derby’s Gabriella Prizio in 2016. Fellow Sacred Heart senior Edward Williams jr. won his final 100m hurdles race in the NVL with a time of 14.43.

Wilby sophomore Messiah Harling was part of two wins, one individual and one relay. Harling claimed gold in the triple jump (46′) and was part of the gold medal-winning 4x100m relay, along with senior teammates Daniel Navarro, Sean Thomas and Dylen McKitty.

Two senior boys went out with gold medals. Tariq Phillips of Kennedy was first in the 100m dash (11.15) while Elijah Lewis of Crosby took the top spot in the 800m (1:58.72).

A pair of junior girls also won gold. Shannon Burby of Wolcott took gold in the javelin (104’11”) while Christina Capozzi of Kennedy finished first in the 100m dash (13.26).

As for team finishes, the best was the Kennedy boys. The Eagles were third behind champion Naugatuck and second place Derby. The rest of the boys team finishes were: t4. Wilby; 6. Holy Cross; 7. Sacred Heart; t11. Crosby; 13. Wolcott; and 14. Waterbury Career Academy. The top girls finish team-wise was Wolcott in seventh. The rest of the girls team finishes were: 8. Holy Cross; 9. Kennedy; 10. WCA; 12. Sacred Heart; t13. St. Paul and Crosby; and 15. Wilby.
