The CIAC state tournaments have begun for some local teams this weekend. On Saturday, games were contested in baseball and girls tennis. Bristol Central baseball emerged as the lone winner.
The Rams, seeded 30th in Class L, overcame an early 3-0 deficit and defeated No. 35 Maloney 9-6 in a qualifying round game on Saturday morning at Bristol Central High School. Central (9-12) plays No. 3 Platt Tech (16-4 regular season) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Platt Tech in Milford.
Bristol Eastern baseball, seeded 34th in Class L, saw its season end with a 6-1 qualifying round loss to No. 31 Bunnell on Saturday. The Lancers finished the season with a record of 8-13. It was the final game for seniors Carson Sassu, Ian Latko, Ethan Ryan, Jagger Duquette, Noah Hickey, Trevor Mays, Alexander Valley and James Dauphinee.
Kennedy baseball, seeded 33rd in Class LL, lost a close qualifying round game 8-6 to No. 32 Farmington on Saturday at Tunxis Mead Park. The Eagles finished the season with a record of 9-12. It was the final game for seniors Anthony Quinones, Xavier Frias, Jake Desjardins, Angel Colon, Jordan Castellano and Bryant Bonilla.
In girls tennis, both St. Paul and Wolcott saw their seasons end in the first round of the Class S team tournament. The No. 13 Falcons lost 6-1 at No. 4 Litchfield while the No. 18 Eagles were downed 7-0 at No. 2 Lyme-Old Lyme.
St. Paul finished the season with a record of 13-5. It was the final match for seniors Lydia Feng, Violet Rodriguez and Ximena Varela-Marin.
Wolcott finished with a record of 10-9. It was the final match for seniors Rachel Hubeny, Elena Marciano, Bella Piacentini, Skylar Romsky, Tiona Watts and Makayla Welton.
Wolcott had defeated No. 15 Holy Cross 5-2 in a qualifying round match played Friday at Wilby High School. The Crusaders finished with a record of 11-6. It was the final match for seniors Allysa Cayabyab, Julia Dzinski, Julia Flynn, Jasmine Thorpe and Fiona Xhafi. Dzinski won the NVL girls singles tournament.
No. 7 Sacred Heart was also playing in Class S girls tennis. The Hearts hosted No. 10 East Granby in a first round matchup at Fulton Park, but the Crusaders eliminated the home team by a score of 4-3. It was the final match for Sacred Heart seniors Hannah Dombroski, Siobhan Gilmore, Ava Longo, Nhi Nguyen, Sheila Paucar and Brooke Radaskie.
