HIGH 5 OF THE WEEK: Sarah Lawton named first team all-conference

Sarah Lawton was a multiple time all-league and all-state standout while playing for Meg Dwyer at Holy Cross High School. Earlier this week, the Florida SouthWestern State College sophomore became a first team all-conference college player.

Lawton was named first team All-Suncoast Conference after compiling a 5-1 record, 1.58 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings of work during league play. She also had two saves against conference opponents.

Lawton has appeared in 28 games overall for the top-ranked Bucs (52-1). She started seven games and had a record of 11-1 to go with seven saves, four complete games and a 1.42 ERA. In 88 innings, Lawton has struck out 91 batters and walked just 15. She has given up 20 runs (16 earned) on 56 hits. Lawton was one of three FSW pitchers selected to the first team.

The Bucs play Seminole State College of Florida in the first round of the Florida College System Activities Association state tournament on Thursday, May 2.

Ashley Cummings, Southern Connecticut State University track and field

This sophomore was part of SCSU’s 4x400m relay that took first place at UMass-Lowell’s George Davis Invitational with a time of 4:23.37. The Owl quartet were named the Northeast-10 Women’s Relay of the Week for their collective effort.

Cummings (second leg) teamed with Emily Maffeo (first leg); Emilie Noreika (third leg); and Meghan Delaney (fourth leg) to take the top spot. Cummings, who competed at Bristol Central, also ran the 800m, where she finished ninth with a time of 2:41.26.

SCSU competes next at the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday.

Ashley Elder, Southern New Hampshire University track and field

This senior and former multisport standout at Bristol Central made the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll after winning two events at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational.

Elder finished first in the discus with a throw of 131’7″, and she also took the top spot in the hammer throw with a toss of 137’11”. Elder was second in the shot put with a throw of 45’10”.

SNHU takes part in the Skyhawk Invitational at Stonehill College on Saturday.

Tyriq Harris, Albertus Magnus College baseball

This senior and former Wilby standout was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll after a strong effort.

Harris was 5-for-10 over three games for Albertus Magnus with a double, five runs scored and four RBI. He collected three hits, including a double, to go with three runs scored and two RBI in a 13-2 win at Pine Manor College. The Falcons swept Colby-Sawyer College in a doubleheader, and Harris tallied two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Harris hit .500 over the three games with a .455 on-base percentage and .600 slugging percentage.

Harris has played in all 31 games and is batting .374 with a .442 on-base percentage and .527 slugging percentage. In 91 at bats, he has collected 34 hits, including five doubles, three triples, one home run and 15 RBI. Harris has scored 26 runs, walked 11 times, and stolen six bases.

Charline Plasczynski, Western Connecticut State University softball

This junior and former Bristol Eastern standout is one of the top hitters for the Colonials. Plasczynski has played in all 30 games for WCSU (17-13).

Plasczynski leads the Colonials in at bats (84) and runs scored (23), and she is tied for lead in doubles (6); triples (3); home runs (4); RBI (23); and walks (11). Plasczynski is hitting .345 with a .421 on-base percentage and .631 slugging percentage.

WCSU has six games left in its regular season. The Colonials play their Senior Day doubleheader against the University of Southern Maine at Sacred Heart University. On Sunday, WCSU is at UMass-Dartmouth for another doubleheader that was originally scheduled for April 13. On Tuesday, the Colonials close the regular season with yet another doubleheader against Trinity College.
