Big first inning propels Sacred Heart baseball to first win of season

Sacred Heart baseball suffered back-to-back, walk-off losses to open the 2019 season.

In the first inning of their first home game on Thursday at Municipal Stadium, visiting Torrington got out to a 2-0 lead. The Hearts made sure the Red Raiders only led for a half an inning. Sacred Heart erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to a 13-4 victory. The Hearts improved to 1-2.

After a two-run first inning, Sacred Heart pitcher Hector Alejandro made sure his new-found lead held up. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, struck out 17, walked three and hit one batter. Alejandro came out with two outs in the seventh after hitting the 110-pitch limit (he finished his last batter and ended the game with 116).

Justin Stephens had three hits for Sacred Heart, including a triple, to go with his three RBI and two runs scored. Ernest McClary tallied three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Zach LaFerriere had two hits, drove in a game-high four runs, and scored two runs. Billy French tallied a hit and three RBI to round out the offensive attack for the Hearts.
