Wolcott baseball had to wait several days to get another shot at its first win. The victory didn’t come easily, but the Eagles did get their first win of the season on Saturday at home against Woodland Regional.
Wolcott scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Reece Ketchum’s two-run double, and Jack Drewry pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out a 3-1 victory over Woodland.
Drewry helped his infield overcome three errors, then one of his infielders came up with the big hit when it was needed. First, that infielder needed to be set up for his chance to be the hero.
Drewry led off the sixth with a single, but was forced at second base on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Trey Nastri. Jeff Nicol walked, then Anthony Ligi laid a perfect bunt down the third baseline to load the bases. Alec Calabro ripped a ball back through the box, but it hit Woodland pitcher Jason Claiborn, and he was able to recover and throw out Nastri at the plate. That brought Ketchum to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.
Ketchum worked the count to 2-1, then ripped a grounder through the infield into right center. Nicol and Ligi scored, and Ketchum reached second with a double. The Hawks got out of the inning, but the Eagles had the lead and sent Drewry back out to the mound for the seventh.
Drewry got a fly out to centerfielder Dane Hassan for the first out of the seventh. Drewry got the game’s last two outs on strikeouts, the first swinging and the second looking on a nasty curveball. Drewry gave up an unearned run on four hits and struck out 11 in his complete-game effort.
