WRESTLING ROUNDUP: St. Paul finishes sixth in Berkshire-Valley Invitational

St. Paul wrestling took sixth place (65 points) in the 2019 Berkshire-Valley Invitational on Saturday at The Gilbert School in Winsted. The host school Gilbert finished first with 203 points.

Daniel Kelly (106 pounds), Evan Kowalski (113) and Erik Atkinson (152) all took second place finishes for the Falcons. Ben Foligno (220) claimed a third place finish. Kelly was 1-1 at 106 in a round robin format. Kowalski lost via pin at 113 and Atkinson lost by major decision at 152. Foligno scored a pin to a finish third at 220.

Kelly’s lone win at 106 was by fall. Kowalski won his first two bouts by pin to reach the 113 final. Atkinson won by fall and decision to reach the 152 final. Foligno won three bouts by pin on the way to his third place finish at 220.

Thomaston/Holy Cross/Litchfield

The co-op finished seventh overall with 53 team points. Nick Pietrofazio (138) and Patrick Chesanek (160) each finished third in their weight classes. Caesar Velez (113), Preston Ross (220) and Connor Bengston (285) all took fourth place.

Pietrofazio won a 6-5 decision in his first bout at 138. He won by fall in his first consolation bout, then took third place by injury default. Chesanek won a pair of consolation bouts to take third place at 160, with both victories coming via pin. Velez won by pin at 113 in the championship bracket and took a decision in the consolation bracket before losing the third place bout. Ross won two consolation bouts by fall at 220 before losing in the third place bout. Bengston advanced to the third place bout at 285 by injury default before losing in the third place bout.
