Wolcott’s Kathryn Rodrigues captures two gold medals at Class M meet

Wolcott junior Kathryn Rodrigues has already had her fair share of success during this indoor track and field season. On Saturday, her day was a golden one.

Rodrigues captured not one, but two individual gold medals at the Class M state championship meet at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center. She made yet another clean sweep of the 1600m and 3200m races. Rodrigues finished first in the 1600m in 5:12.75, nearly five seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Weston junior Mie Alexsson. In the 3200m, Rodrigues crossed the finish line in 11:24.60, over eight seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Bethel freshman Ava Graham. Rodrigues single-handedly led Wolcott to a tie for eighth place with 20 points. Hillhouse won the team championship with 76 points.

Wolcott sophomore Nicholas Bendtsen placed sixth in the 3200m in a time of 10:00.48. Bendtsen earned the lone team point for the Eagles. Hillhouse won the team championship with 87 points.

More about Rodrigues…

It was the second straight championship meet that saw Rodrigues sweep the 1600m and 3200m. Rodrigues did the same thing at the NVL championship meet on Jan. 28, which was also held at the FLAC in New Haven. She ran the 1600m in 5:18.27 and the 3200m in 11:40.89.

Rodrigues has also put up impressive efforts outside of Connecticut. She finished fourth in the one-mile run invitational event (5:07.31) at the New Balance Games in New York City. Rodrigues was fifth in the 1500m en route invitational (4:46.89).
