CIAC GIRLS TOURNEY: Eastern, St. Paul, Sacred Heart, Holy Cross claim first round wins

Bristol Eastern, St. Paul, Sacred Heart and Holy Cross all picked up first round wins over the first two days of the CIAC girls basketball state tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Bristol’s version of the Lancers dropped the hammer on the Waterford contingent of Lancers, 64-34 in Bristol on Monday in a matchup of No. 9 and No. 24 seeds. Jordan Ouellette went for 24 points while Ciara Collins added 17 points in the Class L game.

No. 3 St. Paul ran all over No. 30 Coventry, 70-26, in a Class S contest on Monday. Jade Udoh had 25 points and seven steals while Janessa Gonzalez added 24 points and seven steals. Gonzalez went over the 1,000-point mark in her career and now has 1,001 points.

No. 4 Sacred Heart defeated NVL foe Oxford, No. 29, by a score of 50-35 in Class M on Tuesday. Aamya Rivera led three Hearts in double figures with 14 points. Hayley Tucker scored 12 points while Paige Carroll added 10 points.

No. 12 Holy Cross took down No. 21 New Fairfield 51-44, also in Class M on Tuesday. Cayla Howard paced the Crusaders with 16 points. She got help from Hannah Brown (8 points), Jasmine Thorpe (8) and Alyssa Hebb (7).
