Wolcott boys basketball impressive early on

It was early in the fourth quarter on Thursday night, and Wolcott boys basketball held a sizable lead on host Bristol Central in its own holiday tournament.

The Rams looked like they had a breakaway basket, but Eagle senior Chris Harris had a different idea. Harris, a 5-foot-9 guard, got back on defense and emphatically swatted the Central shot out of bounds, which fired up his Wolcott team and the fans who made the short trip down Route 69.

The Eagles wouldn’t allow an easy basket, even with a big lead. Wolcott went on to beat Central 73-62 on Thursday to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Eagles face Greenwich on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the championship game at BCHS.

Senior-laden Wolcott ran solid offensive sets against a very young Central team and came away with open shots. Senior forward Elmin Redzepagic led a four-headed Eagle attack with 21 points (3 3-pointers). Jack Drewry, another senior forward, connected for 16 points. Fellow senior forward Jeff Nicol tallied 12 points (2 3-pointers), and Harris contributed 10 points (2 3-pointers).

Wolcott boasts nine seniors on its 2018-2019 CIAC roster. The Eagles have clicked so far in victories over Waterbury Career Academy, Wilby and Bristol Central, and they hope to keep it going against Greenwich on Saturday.
