St. Paul softball is 8-1 after nine games in the 2017 season.
The Falcons are already more than halfway to their win total of the 2016 regular season (13-7), and the season is not halfway over yet. St. Paul is one close loss to Seymour — 5-3 at home on April 17 — away from being 9-0.
How have head coach Gary Hovhanessian’s Falcons done it?
Start with senior pitcher Alessandra Milardo. Milardo has been a mainstay in the circle for St. Paul throughout her career, but she has been at her best this season. Milardo is also a solid hitter for the Falcons.
Senior Brooke Perez has also been good at the plate. She had four hits in a win over Plainville in the second game of the season.
Fellow senior Brigid Johndrow has been hard to keep off the bases as well. Johndrow had a four-hit game against Woodland and a three-hit game against Watertown. The athletic Johndrow stole six bases on six attempts in that Woodland win.
Sophomore Abby Poirot also had four hits in the Woodland game, three of which went for doubles. Poirot has also spelled Milardo in the circle.
Freshman Janessa Gonzalez burst onto the scene with three hits in each of her first two games.
St. Paul doesn’t beat you with home runs. The Falcons do hit a bunch of doubles, led by Poirot, Milardo and sophomore Jessica Persechino.
St. Paul is scheduled to host Ansonia on Wednesday, followed by Kennedy on Friday. Next week brings big tests on the road at Holy Cross on Monday and Torrington on Wednesday.
