Brianna Root was a three-time All-CCC South and two-time all-state performer at Bristol Eastern High School. Root had a storied career for the Lancers, which included a Class L state championship and a pair of CCC Tournament titles.
Root moved on to Post University, where she continued her volleyball career and her studies. According to a story about the women’s volleyball team’s 3-1 loss to Holy Family on Nov. 11, Root “capped off one of the best volleyball careers in the history of Post University.” Root accumulated a program record 7,543 assists, including 1,092 in her senior season. She tallied 1,314 assists as a freshman, 1,226 as a sophomore, and 1,121 as a junior. She was CACC and ECAC Rookie of the Year in 2015, then claimed DII CCA East Region Second Team as a sophomore. Root was a First Team All-CACC selection in her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons, then was Second Team All-CACC as a senior.
Root and Post earned a No. 1 seed in the CACC Tournament by winning the Northern Division. The Eagles won quarterfinal and semifinal matches before losing to Southern Division No. 1 seed Holy Family in the final. In her final match for Post, Root tallied 34 assists, six digs, one kill and one ace. She posted 40 or more assists in 10 different matches as a senior, including a season-high 49 against Concordia (N.Y.) on Oct. 9. Root also tallied 48 assists in two different matches.
It was an amazing run for Root, and one that will not soon be forgotten by Post women’s volleyball.
