Sacred Heart girls soccer, with some big help from Kaynor Tech, back in postseason

Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech girls soccer beat Ansonia 7-5 on Friday in Ansonia.

The win put the co-op record at 7-7, and it also clinched a state tournament berth. It’s the first time a Sacred Heart girls soccer team has reached the postseason since 1996. The Hearts were a No. 19 seed that year and lost 3-0 to No. 14 East Hampton in a Class S first round game.

Current Sacred Heart teacher and coach Molly DePiava was the senior goalie for that 1996 team. She was Molly Blake at that time. DePiava is one former Heart soccer player who is incredibly happy for the program. Other soccer alumni made the trip to Ansonia for the game and got to share in the celebration.

As for the game itself, Jenn Lliguizaca, Emma Minicucci and Janet Lliguizaca each had big days putting the ball in the back of the net for SH/KT. Minicucci also had two assists on the day.

SH/KT has ripped off three straight wins after a loss to Wolcott on Oct. 12 put its record at 4-7. The co-op has won six of their last seven games.
