Recapping the first three days of state tournament play

The first three days of the state tournament have been contested. The going was tough for local teams on Monday with just three winners. Tuesday was a better day with four winners. No local teams won on Wednesday.

Here’s what happened each day. For the teams that lost, the final score is listed, along with the seniors who will be graduating.

MONDAY
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
#20 Wolcott 3, #13 Weaver 1 (18-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-18): The Eagles won three straight sets after dropping the first to the Beavers in their Class M first round match.
Sage Thornton had 13 kills, Sofia Gugliotti tallied five kills and five aces, and Miley Guerrera added five kills for Wolcott.

, #23 Housatonic 0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-17): The No. Falcons moved on to Class S’s second round following a sweep of the Mountaineers.

, #23 Windham Tech 1: The Crusaders were the lone local to win on the pitch Monday, doing so in a Class M first round matchup with the Mighty Tigers at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.
#4 Nonnewaug 1, #29 Wolcott 0 (PK4-3): The Eagles and Chiefs battled through 100 minutes of scoreless soccer in their Class M first round game in Woodbury, and that led to penalty kicks.
Wolcott tied the penalty kicks at 1-1 and 3-3 before Nonnewaug scored on the last shot of its initial five attempts. Besim Yucel, Ryan Riviezzo and Karol Tawiah scored on penalty kicks for the Eagles, who ended their season at 7-8-3. Wolcott loses Yucel, Riviezzo, Tawiah, Angjelo Terolli, Genci Seferi, Sitta Keita and Albi Bylyku.

#7 Bristol Central 3, #26 Ledyard 0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-11): The Rams ran past the Colonels in their Class L first round match.
Brooke Valentino had nine kills and two aces; Maddie Lodovico added eight kills, two aces and two total blocks; Olivia Clingan tallied six kills, five aces and three blocks; Lily Kirk recorded three aces and two total blocks; Sam Sklenka contributed 19 digs; and Alex Rivera chipped in 12 digs and 23 assists.
#11 Bristol Eastern 3, #22 Windsor 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18): The Lancers got past their CCC foe in their Class L first round home matchup.
Lauren Bender was big on offense at the net, Emily Valentine was strong serving, and Lilli Lowe provided tough defense at the net. Gabby Caucci closed out the final set and match with an ace.
GIRLS SOCCER

#22 St. Paul 6, #11 Capital Prep 0: Emily Walker had a hat trick for the Falcons in their Class S first round win at Quirk Middle School.
Grace Peterson, Rachel Leone and Vanessa Visconti also scored for St. Paul, which plays at No. 6 Morgan in the second round Thursday.
