Wolcott, St. Paul, WCA football earn first wins of 2018

Three area football teams picked up their first win of the season after losing in Week 1.

 

Wolcott HS logoWolcott went on the road and grabbed a 38-20 win over Oxford. Anthony Ligi ran 18 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Sforza added 24 carries for 111 yards and three touchdowns as the other part of the two-headed monster in the Eagle backfield, according to a story by Ed Daigneault on The Red Zone.

Sforza scored the first two touchdowns for Wolcott for a 14-7 halftime lead. Ligi’s first touchdown run was the lone score of the third quarter and the Eagles jumped ahead 22-7. Sforza’s third touchdown had Wolcott up 30-7 and after Oxford scored to make it 30-13, Ligi put the game away with his second and final touchdown run, according to results posted on Hudl.

 

St. Paul knocked off Watertown 30-16 on Saturday on the friendly grass surface of McPhee Field at St. Paul Catholic High School.

Kevin Ashworth ran for touchdowns of 60 and 4 yards, and he threw a scoring pass of 15 yards to Max Peruta. Sam Rapp ran 44 yards for the other Falcon touchdown. St. Paul converted on three of its four two-point attempts, according to results posted on Hudl.

Ashworth scored a touchdown in each of the first two quarters to give the Falcons a 16-0 halftime lead. Rapp’s touchdown put St. Paul ahead 22-0 in the third quarter, and the Ashworth to Peruta touchdown pass increased the lead to 30-8 in the fourth quarter.

 

WCA took down Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech 34-22 on Friday at Ray Snyder Sr. Field.

Saijon McIntosh electrified those in attendance with an 80-yard return on the opening kickoff for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead for the co-op. Jalen Gopie got the Spartans going with a 55-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6. Gopie added another touchdown run of 15 yards in the second quarter to put WCA ahead 12-6. With a little over two minutes to go until halftime, Savin Ettson and Jacob Torres hooked up for a 55-yard touchdown pass, and the two-point conversion had the Spartans up 20-6 at halftime. WCA extended the advantage to 26-6 in the third quarter on a 90-yard run by Gopie. Alex Gonzalez ran 31 yards for a score to get SH/KT to within 26-14, but Gopie went 44 yards for another score, and the ensuing conversion put WCA up 34-14. Gonzalez passed to McIntosh for a 75-yard score, and the co-op hit a two-point conversion for the game’s final points.
