WEEK 4 FOOTBALL: Tough night for area teams

Wilby turned out to be the lone local winner on the gridiron on Friday night in Week 4 of the high school football season.

The Wildcats beat Crosby 46-14 for their first victory since Thanksgiving 2014.

Bristol Central was mere minutes from a major upset of Middletown at Bristol Central High School. The Rams led 9-3, but the Blue Dragons scored on touchdowns of 91 and 69 yards to steal a 17-9 victory in front of a stunned crowd at BCHS. Central was oh so close to pulling the upset, but couldn’t finish off drives. The Rams dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Holy Cross also experienced a heartbreaking loss at Seymour. The Crusaders led 13-6 late in the fourth quarter after an Alex Ward touchdown run, but the Wildcats got a touchdown run with a minute left, then hit a perfectly executed trick play conversion pass for a 14-13 lead. Holy Cross didn’t score on its final drive, and Seymour won 14-13. Qaron Brown caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Corey Fappiano for the other Crusader score. Holy Cross dropped to 2-2.

Wolcott was tied 14-14 at halftime against Woodland in Beacon Falls, but the Hawks blew away the Eagles in the second half for a 41-14 victory. Anthony Ligi had two touchdown runs for Wolcott, which fell to 2-2.

St. Paul got its lone touchdown on a three-yard third quarter run from Rudy Otero in a 46-6 loss to Ansonia. The Falcons dropped to 1-3.
